The other day just as i was to begin a Yoga class i got to chatting with a Dermatologist. The conversation swirled from skin cancer and landed on plastic surgery and the rage for perfection. Perfection in body, perfection in skin, perfection in personality, and now Yoga has been thrown into this idea of perfection. Yoga is in! Gone is the “aerobic craze” and now its the Bikram phase! It got me thinking about Citta (an individual’s collective conscious) “Citta, which is the source of thinking, understanding & action… is like fire, fueled by desires, without which fire dies out. Citta in that pure state becomes a source of enlightenment” – Light on Pranayama, BKS Iyengar
There is so many reason’s we all do what we do, have a shopping craze, rush to work, have babies, get married, don’t get married, have a family, don’t have a family, learn to kayak, learn to swim, eat that box of donuts, open a mechanic shop, cheat on a spouse, find a home, the list goes on and on. Depending on our sensitivity level we attack life or shrink from it. Our ruthlessness may lead to hateful actions, or level of love may make one do powerful things.
All this depending on our security in life, our security in ourselves, in our minds, in our bodies, in our environment, in our support systems. When supported by life it just seems the the world is an endless possibility and when it feels as if no one is there, the world is full of corners. It was in this conversation with the dermatologist that i felt the limiting of life of what may bring a person to consult a knife to cut out the barriers he/she may be facing. In their world maybe the extra wrinkles stood in the way of a job, or the extra 10 pounds stood in the way of keeping the perfect man, or the idea of confronting the harsh world as is was just too much to handle. The fight grew too much and the battered person was left to get stitched up to enter the world again… But can one change the world? or do we in the end succumb to the demand of what the world screams…?
So much of our lives we see through a veil of idea’s and many of these idea’s are self induced, depending on our choice, you see, we choose the magazines we read, we choose the television show’s to watch, we choose our friends, we choose our conversations, we choose most of our life into existance. That is the scary part of it, the steps can be retraced, back to square one. The amazing thing of it all is that the monster or beauty we become is only in our judgement. Like Shakespeare once said “There is no good or bad, only thinking makes it so…” So i’m thinking that when it come’s down to it… If it makes you feel bad, you know there is something lurking in a corner behind that feeling however if its got you feeling good, its gotta lead to something beautiful…. and if you sit real still for a few moments you may feel the veil lift and the absurdity of the mind’s fickleness will leave you to experience some… limitlessness…
